Nikolai Axmacher is a cognitive neuroscientist at Ruhr University Bochum. With his lab, he investigates the neural mechanisms of memory and spatial navigation in the healthy brain as well as the neurocognitive pathologies in posttraumatic stress disorder and early Alzheimer's disease. A particular focus is the application of methods from artificial intelligence to analyse "engrams", i.e. memory traces of unique experiences. His aim is to identify from neural activity patterns what we remember in a given situation, and how we remember it. At the ELH, the unique spatial resolution of fMRI recordings at 7T will allow investigating these processes at an even more mechanistic level.
