Meet us on the roof

As the father of modern rocketry Dr. Robert H. Goddard once said "It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow". For 20 years scientists at the ELH are discussing the great potential of having a roof deck on the building. During our very first summer on the coking plant, we have already envisioned remote scanning from this stimulating workplace which today is common practice at many MRI sites. May the dream come true tomorrow? We will see...

The Creation of the ELH

Inspired by Michelangelo's iconic "The Creation of Adam", this artwork reimagines the moment of creation, not as a divine act, but as a powerful cooperation between two nations. Just as Adam is brought to life by the touch of God, this image symbolises the spark that ignited groundbreaking research in ultra-high field (UHF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at the Erwin L. Hahn Institute for MRI (ELH). On July 4th, 2005, the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Radboud University, Nijmegen, joined forces by signing the cooperation agreement that led to the creation of the ELH.

Mosaic of Erwin Louis Hahn – Pioneer of magnetic resonance imaging

Erwin Louis Hahn, the namesake of our institute and an inspiration to every scientist, revolutionized medicine with his discovery of spin echoes. His work has enabled us to examine the human body in a completely new way and to detect diseases earlier.

However, a photo in the mosaic shows an object that he definitely would not have taken into the MRI. He might have used this item to recharge and clear his mind.

How the ELH was found(ed) - The TRUE story

How the ELH was found(ed) - The TRUE story

In the age of fake news, half-truths, and glorified legends, the true story of the ELH’s founding has been buried under layers of speculation and myth. Who really stood at the cradle of the Hahn Institute? What sparked its beginnings? And why do so many different versions of the story exist?

This exclusive short film strips away the noise to reveal the unvarnished truth about the earliest days of the ELH. With first-hand insights, unpublished footage, and a healthy dose of irony, we trace the true events that led to the birth of the institute.

No hype, no fluff, no filters—just the raw, authentic account of how the ELH was found(ed). Whether you’re a long-time follower or a curious newcomer, this is the origin story you didn’t know you needed.

Now & Then

Two decades lie between the two photographs. One image is from the early 2000s, the other from June 2025. By attempting to recreate the focal length and angle of the original shot on location, a collage is created that allows a glimpse into both the past and the present.
