Fancy being a scientist for a day?

In the course of their lives, almost everyone will at one point have to get an MRI (short for

Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan done - but what exactly does the machine do, and why is it so important for hospitals and science? The short answer is: because it allows us to look inside people, for example to find tumours in cancer patients. But an MRI can do much more!

At the Erwin. L. Hahn Institute, we are not only working on improving MRIs, but also do practical research! For example, multiple of our research groups try to unlock how and where information in the brain is processed. They are particularly interested in how addictions, pain or anxiety disorders, change these processes in the brain.

For this year’s Girls' Day, scientists Dr Stephanie Antons, who conducts research into addictive disorders, and medical student Annika Verheyen will show interested  8th and 9th graders how they use MRI in their work and which topics are particularly important to them. And, of course, they will also be on hand to answer your questions!

The event will take place at the Erwin L. Hahn Institute at the Zollverein World Heritage Site in Essen on April 25th from 10:00-14:00. The number of participants is limited to 10, registration is required by 23.4.2024 to elh@uni-due.de.
