Girl Scouts on the Hunt

It's not every day that you have girl scouts in the house - so we were particularly pleased that it happened last week.

Initiated by Annika Verheyen, around fifteen girls aged between eight and twelve visited the Erwin L. Hahn Institute for MRI on 7 October to find out more about the exciting everyday life of a scientist and to learn exactly what an MRI machine is. As part of a scavenger hunt, the girls from the Stamm St. Barbara in Mülheim (St. Georg Girl Scouts) went on a discovery tour through the building in two groups after a short presentation and solved tasks at various stations along the way. What sound does an MRI machine make? Does the scanned image show the inside of a banana or an onion? And is the magnet always on?

The final highlight was the treasure chest specially designed by ELH with unknown contents, which had to be scanned before opening for safety's sake. What fruit is inside? The girls eagerly guessed and were in for a little surprise when they finally opened the box: in addition to fruit, there were also small sweets inside, which everyone was allowed to help themselves to.

Tired but satisfied, the girls then went home, and the ELH was also delighted with an all-round successful event.
